Antihero Skateboards was founded in 1995 by pro skater Julien Stranger, who dreamed it up with Thrasher's Jake Phelps as a countercurrent to the increasingly polished, corporate state of mid-90s skateboarding. Stranger built the brand while riding for Real Skateboards under Jim Thiebaud's Deluxe Distribution, and Antihero became the first company to launch out of the Deluxe camp after Real itself. Deluxe, founded in San Francisco in 1986, now distributes Antihero alongside Real Skateboards, Krooked, Spitfire Wheels, Thunder Trucks, and Venture Trucks, and also owns the DLXSF retail shop. Antihero's instantly recognizable bald eagle graphic, along with much of its irreverent artwork, was created by artist Todd Francis. The team is unusually tight-knit, with new riders unanimously voted in by the existing roster, and includes John Cardiel, Grant Taylor, Tony Trujillo, Brian Anderson, Frank Gerwer, Peter Hewitt, Chris Pfanner, Raney Beres, and Daan Van Der Linden. Four Antihero riders have won Thrasher's Skater of the Year: Cardiel (1992), Anderson (1999), Trujillo (2002), and Taylor (2011).
